The cacao tree is a fascinating tropical plant that produces the famous pods containing cacao beans.
☀️ Light
Partial shade to bright indirect light. The cacao tree naturally grows under the canopy. Avoid direct sunlight.
💧 Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly. Requires very high ambient humidity (70-80%).
🌡️ Temperature
Ideal: 22-28°C. Minimum: 18°C. Very sensitive to cold and temperature fluctuations. A demanding houseplant in Quebec.
🌱 Fertilization
Apply a balanced fertilizer every 2-3 weeks in spring and summer. Choose a fertilizer rich in potassium for fruiting.
🪴 Repotting
Every 2 years in spring. Rich, well-draining, and slightly acidic potting soil. Good drainage is essential.
✂️ Size
Prune lightly to maintain a compact shape. The cacao tree flowers on the trunk and main branches (cauliflory).
🐛 Common problems
- Spider mites: Spray regularly to prevent
- Falling leaves: Air too dry or water stress
- Rot: Excess water or poor drainage
🍫 Fruiting
Can produce from 3-5 years old. Small pink flowers directly on the trunk. Colourful pods (yellow, orange, red) containing cocoa beans.
Tropico-Québec tip: Cacao trees require very high humidity. Use a humidifier or a water tray with clay pebbles.
