General advice – Other tropical plants in Canada

  • Light: most appreciate good light, ranging from bright light without direct sunlight to bright partial shade depending on the species.
  • Substrate: quality potting soil for potted plants, often well draining; some species like a little more moisture, others a more aerated substrate.
  • Watering: Water when the top of the soil begins to dry out; avoid prolonged excess water in the pot.
  • Fertilizer: balanced fertilizer for green or tropical plants every 3–4 weeks during the growing season.
  • Temperature: Keep frost-free at all times; most prefer to stay above 15°C, especially during active growth.
  • Wintering: bring the plants indoors before the first frosts into a bright room or heated greenhouse, slightly reducing watering.
