☕ GROWING GUIDE – Coffee Plant (Coffea arabica)

☕ Coffee plant (Coffea arabica)

Elegant houseplant with fragrant blooms and coffee beans.

The coffee plant is a beautiful tropical plant with glossy foliage that can produce coffee beans in a pot.

☀️ Light

Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which will burn the leaves. Ideal near an east- or west-facing window with a curtain.

💧 Watering

Keep the soil consistently slightly moist. Water regularly, but do not allow it to dry out completely. Use non-calcareous water.

🌡️ Temperature

Ideal: 18-24°C. Minimum: 13°C. Avoid sudden temperature changes. Prefers high ambient humidity.

🌱 Fertilization

Fertilizer for acid-loving plants (such as azaleas) every 2-3 weeks in spring and summer. Reduce in winter.

🪴 Repotting

Every spring for young plants. Every 2 years for mature plants. Acidic and well-draining potting soil.

✂️ Size

Pinch back the young shoots to encourage branching. Prune lightly to maintain a compact shape.

🐛 Common problems

  • Scale insects: Treat with insecticidal soap
  • Brown leaves: Air too dry or hard water
  • Yellow leaves: Excess water or iron deficiency

☕ Fruiting

Fragrant white flowers appear after 3-4 years. Red fruits (coffee cherries) contain 2 beans. Harvesting is possible but yield is low in pots.

Tropico-Québec tip: The coffee plant is primarily a beautiful houseplant. Mist it regularly to maintain humidity.
