✨ GROWING GUIDE – Miracle Fruits (Synsepalum dulcificum)
✨ Miracle Fruit (Synsepalum dulcificum)
Magical berries that transform acidity into sweetness for 30-60 minutes.
The miracle fruit contains a protein (miraculin) that temporarily changes the perception of sour taste into sweet taste.
☀️ Light
Bright, indirect light in partial shade. Avoid direct, scorching sunlight. Ideal near an east- or west-facing window with a curtain.
💧 Watering
Keep the soil consistently slightly moist. Use soft water (rainwater or filtered water). Sensitive to limescale.
🌡️ Temperature
Ideal: 20-27°C. Minimum: 15°C. Prefers high humidity (60-70%). Houseplant in Quebec.
🌱 Fertilization
Fertilize acid-loving plants (like azaleas) every 3-4 weeks in spring and summer. Avoid lime-based fertilizers.
🪴 Repotting
Every 2 years in spring. Acidic potting soil (pH 4.5-5.8), such as ericaceous compost. Excellent drainage is essential.
✂️ Size
Prune lightly to maintain a compact shape. Pinch back young shoots to encourage branching.
🐛 Common problems
- Yellow leaves: Hard water or pH too high
- Slow growth: Normal, slow-growing plant
- Scale insects: Treat with insecticidal soap
✨ Fruiting
Can produce from 2-3 years old. Small, oblong red berries. Chew the pulp for 30 seconds, then taste a lemon: it will be sweet!
Tropico-Québec tip: Use only non-calcareous water and acidic potting soil. The miracle fruit is very sensitive to lime.
