🍊 GROWING GUIDE – Citrus Fruits

(Lemon, Lime, Orange, Kumquat, Mandarin)

Citrus trees are among the most popular fruit trees for growing in pots. They produce early, smell wonderful, and adapt very well to indoor cultivation in Quebec with the right care.

Repotting

Repot only in spring and use a pot that isn't too large. A light potting mix like Promix HP is ideal. Make sure the pot drains very well and that no water remains in the saucer.

Light

Citrus trees need plenty of light. A south-facing window is ideal. Indoors, add a grow light if necessary. In summer, place them outside in direct sunlight after they have acclimatized.

Watering

Water when the top of the soil is dry. In summer, water daily. In winter, water less frequently. Absolutely avoid letting the soil become waterlogged. Cold water can shock the plant; always use lukewarm water.

Fertilizer

Citrus trees are heavy feeders. In summer, use a 20-20-20 or 15-30-15 fertilizer once or twice a week. Actisol works very well as an organic option. No fertilizer is needed in winter.

Temperature

Citrus trees prefer moderate warmth: between 18 and 30°C. In winter, keep them in a cooler room (around 10°C) to encourage future flowering.

Flowering and fruit

Citrus trees flower on new shoots. Strong light and a cool rest period promote flowering. Production depends on the variety, but most produce well in pots.

Wintering

Keep them in a cool, bright room. Reduce watering. Watch for insects, as dry air can attract mealybugs.

Tropico-Québec Advice

Lightly mist the air around your citrus trees in winter. Prune to maintain a nice shape and encourage flowering.
