🥑 GROWING GUIDE – Avocado Trees
The avocado tree is an easy-to-grow, decorative tropical plant that thrives in pots. It grows quickly, develops attractive foliage, and adapts well to Canada indoor environments. While its yield is low, it is an excellent tropical ornamental plant.
Repotting
Repot in spring in a pot only slightly larger than the old one. Use a well-draining mix such as Promix HP with perlite. Avocado trees do not tolerate standing water, so ensure the drainage holes are effective.
Light
The avocado tree needs very strong light. A south-facing window is ideal. Direct sunlight improves the plant's vigor. Without enough light, it often loses its leaves. In summer, it can be moved outdoors after acclimatization.
Watering
Water when the top three to five centimeters of soil are dry. In summer, watering may be necessary two to four times a week. In winter, water less frequently. Always use lukewarm water. Too much water will cause the leaves to yellow.
Fertilizer
Fertilize every two weeks in spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer. Actisol works well as an organic option. Do not fertilize in winter.
Temperature
The ideal temperature is 18 to 28°C. Below 12°C, the avocado tree slows down. Avoid cold drafts.
Flowering and fruit
Flowering is rare indoors. Production is mainly possible in heated greenhouses. The flowers have a complex structure, which makes production difficult in Quebec.
Wintering
Place it in a bright location. Reduce watering. No fertilizer is necessary. Slight leaf loss is normal.
Tropico-Québec Advice
Pinch off the top to create a nice, compact tree. Rotate the pot weekly for even growth. Avoid temperature fluctuations.
