🍒 GROWING GUIDE – Guava Trees (Guava)
The guava tree is one of the easiest tropical fruit trees to grow in a pot. It grows quickly, produces fruit early, and offers beautiful, fragrant foliage. In a greenhouse or bright house, it thrives in Canada.
🌱 Repotting
Repot your guava tree in the spring in a light, well-draining potting mix such as Promix HP enriched with perlite. Choose a medium-sized pot to encourage good root growth. A larger pot will accelerate fruit production. Ensure excellent drainage.
☀️ Light
The guava tree loves full sun. Give it 6 to 12 hours of direct sunlight each day. A south-facing window or a greenhouse offers the best conditions. Outdoors, it grows quickly during the summer.
💧 Watering
Allow the top 2 or 3 centimeters of soil to dry out before watering again. In summer, watering can be frequent, sometimes up to three or four times a week depending on the heat. Indoors, one or two waterings per week are sufficient. Avoid using cold water.
🌿 Fertilizer
Guava trees are heavy feeders. Give them a balanced fertilizer like 20-20-20 once a week during the summer. Actisol works very well as an organic alternative. Reduce fertilization in the fall and stop completely during the winter.
🔥 Temperature
The ideal temperature is between 20 and 30°C. The guava tree can temporarily tolerate 10°C, but it stops growing below this temperature. Avoid cold drafts.
🌸 Flowering and production
Guava trees produce fruit quickly in pots, sometimes as early as the second year. They flower several times a season, and most varieties are self-fertile. The fruit ripens in just a few weeks under good conditions.
❄️ Wintering
In winter, keep it in a bright room between 12 and 18°C. Reduce watering and stop fertilizing. Some leaf drop is normal.
⭐ Tropico-Québec Tips
Prune the guava tree regularly to encourage branching and improve fruit production. In a greenhouse, it becomes extremely productive. Rotate the pot weekly for even growth.
