🌿 GROWING GUIDE – Tamarinds (Thai Sweet & Sour)
🌿 Tamarinds (Thai Sweet & Sour)
Tropical fruit tree with delicate foliage and tasty fruit.
The tamarind tree produces edible pods that are sweet (Thai Sweet) or sour (Sour), used in Asian cuisine.
☀️ Light
Full sun. Minimum 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day for good growth and fruiting.
💧 Watering
Water regularly during the growing season. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in winter. Once established, it tolerates drought.
🌡️ Temperature
Ideal: 20-30°C. Minimum: 10°C. Protect from frost. Bring indoors as soon as temperatures drop below 12°C.
🌱 Fertilization
Apply a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) in spring and summer, every 4-6 weeks. A fertilizer for tropical fruit trees is recommended.
🪴 Repotting
Repot every 2-3 years in spring. Use well-draining potting soil enriched with compost. The tamarind tree develops a deep root system.
✂️ Size
Prune lightly to maintain a compact shape. Tamarind trees tolerate pruning well. Remove dead or crossing branches.
🐛 Common problems
- Scale insects: Treat with neem oil
- Yellow leaves: Excess water or iron deficiency
- Slow growth: Lack of light or nutrients
🌿 Fruiting
Can produce from 3-5 years old. The pods ripen in autumn. Thai Sweet is sweeter, Sour is tangy and used in cooking.
Tropico-Québec tip: The tamarind tree adapts well to container growing. Its delicate foliage also makes it a beautiful ornamental plant.
