🫒 CULTURE GUIDE – Olivier Arbequina

🫒 Olivie tree Arbequina

Compact variety ideal for growing in pots, productive and hardy.

Arbequina is one of the best olive varieties for container growing in Quebec.

☀️ Light

Full sun required. Minimum 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Place near a south-facing window in winter.

💧 Watering

Water moderately. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. The olive tree tolerates drought well but not overwatering. Reduce watering significantly in winter.

🌡️ Temperature

Ideal temperature: 15-25°C. Tolerates temperatures down to -5°C for short periods. Overwinter in a cool (5-10°C) and bright location to encourage fruiting.

🌱 Fertilization

Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring and summer, once a month. Choose a fertilizer for Mediterranean plants or citrus trees.

🪴 Repotting

Repot every 2-3 years in spring. Use a very well-draining potting mix (Mediterranean mix or potting mix + sand + perlite). A terracotta pot is recommended.

✂️ Size

Prune in spring to maintain a compact shape. Thin out the center to promote air circulation. Olive trees tolerate pruning very well.

🐛 Common problems

  • Scale insects: Treat with insecticidal soap
  • Yellow leaves: Excess water or poor drainage
  • Leaf drop: Lack of light or water stress

🫒 Fruiting

Can produce fruit from 3-4 years old. Requires a period of winter cold (vernalization) to flower. The olives ripen in autumn.

Tropico-Québec tip: Arbequina adapts perfectly to container gardening in Quebec. Move it outdoors in summer and overwinter it in a cool, bright location.
