💜 GROWING GUIDE – Paulownia (Imperial Tree)
💜 Paulownia (Imperial Tree)
Ultra-fast growth and spectacular mauve flowering in spring.
The Paulownia is one of the fastest growing trees in the world, with beautiful, fragrant mauve flowers.
☀️ Light
Full sun. Minimum 6-8 hours of direct light per day for optimal growth and good flowering.
💧 Watering
Water regularly and generously during the growing season. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
🌡️ Temperature
Ideal temperature: 15-25°C. Hardy down to -20°C once established. Young plants are more susceptible to frost. Can overwinter outdoors in Canada.
🌱 Fertilization
Apply a balanced fertilizer every 3-4 weeks in spring and summer. Paulownia trees are heavy feeders due to their rapid growth.
🪴 Repotting
Water young plants every spring. Paulownia trees develop a substantial root system. A large pot is recommended.
✂️ Size
Prune severely in late winter to control growth and encourage large leaves. Tolerates drastic pruning very well.
🐛 Common problems
- Excessive growth: Prune regularly
- Giant leaves: Normal, can reach 40-60 cm
- Few problems: Very hardy tree
💜 Blooming
Blooms in spring on mature trees (5-7 years old). Clusters of fragrant mauve flowers appear before the leaves.
Tropico-Québec tip: Paulownia can grow 2-3 meters per year! Prune it regularly to keep it in a pot.
