Care sheet – Culture in Canada
- Light: partial shade for the first few years, then full sun or partial sun once well established.
- Watering: keep the soil moist, but not overwatered; very sensitive to prolonged drought when young.
- Substrate: deep, rich, humus-rich and well-drained soil.
- Hardiness: Hardy species in open ground in several regions of Canada if well protected from the wind (light undergrowth or sheltered garden).
- Pollination: ideally plant more than one pawpaw tree to improve fruit set.
- Growing in pots: possible for a few years, but the species prefers open ground in the long term.
