🍌 Dwarf Banana (Cavendish) – Productive, classic "dessert banana" flavour
10" pot (24–48")
10" (24–48") pot
The Great Dwarf banana (Musa acuminata, Cavendish group) is one of the most widely cultivated banana varieties in the world. Also known as " Great Dwarf ," it produces large handfuls of sweet, aromatic bananas , identical in taste to supermarket bananas. Grown extensively by the industry (often associated with the Chiquita brand), it adapts surprisingly well to growing in pots at home or in greenhouses, offering a tropical look and the possibility of harvests under optimal conditions.
Strengths
- Global reference : a very widespread and reliable Cavendish cultivar.
- Delicious fruit : medium-sized, sweet and fragrant bananas.
- Manageable span : approx. 1.8–2.7 m (6–9 ft) depending on pot volume and heat.
- Good condition : robust pseudo-trunk, dense foliage with a tropical appearance.
Quick guide
- Species / Group: Musa acuminata – Cavendish
- Mature height: 1.8–2.7 m (6–9 ft) when grown in a pot
- Light: full sun or very bright (6–8 h+)
- Ideal temperature: 20–32 °C; avoid < 10 °C
- Watering: Regular; allow the top of the substrate to dry out between waterings.
- Fertilizer: active growth = rich formulation (e.g., 20-8-20) every 1–2 weeks
- Fruiting: possible from 12–18 months with adequate warmth, light and pot
Growing tips
- Use a large, well-draining pot (impeccable drainage) and an aerated substrate (potting soil + perlite/coco).
- Maintain strong light and consistent heat to accelerate flowering.
