bougainvillea Barbara Karst
A classic bougainvillea variety with very bright cherry-red bracts. In a 5" pot, it starts growing quickly in spring and forms a vigorous bush, perfect for creating a Mediterranean atmosphere on a terrace, balcony, or in a greenhouse in Canada.
- Colour & flowering: cherry red / fuchsia bracts, abundant flowering all summer in full sun.
- Habit: very vigorous, climbing or bushy depending on size; ideal for trellises, sunny walls and large containers.
- Format received: young, well-rooted plant in a 5" pot.
Care sheet – Culture in Canada
- Light: full sun (minimum 5–6 hours of direct sunlight). Gradually acclimate outdoors in spring.
- Watering: water thoroughly then allow the top of the soil to dry slightly between waterings; avoid stagnant water in the cachepot.
- Substrate: very well-draining potting soil for potted plants; addition of perlite or pumice stone recommended.
- Fertilizer: every 2–3 weeks from May to September with a balanced fertilizer or for flowering plants.
- Temperature: ideal growth between 18 and 30 °C. Bring indoors before 10–12 °C.
- Overwintering: indoors, very bright (south-facing window or cool greenhouse 8–15 °C); reduce watering and prune lightly if necessary.
- Pruning: pinch the new shoots to encourage branching and denser flowering.
