🍌 'Dwarf Namwah' Banana Tree – Dwarf variety, ultra-productive, "vanilla cream" flavor
10" pot (24–48")
10" (24–48") pot
'Dwarf Namwah' ( Pisang Awak group) is a reference for pots or greenhouses cultivation: Very robust pseudostem, excellent wind resistance and generous bunches of bananas Sweet, fragrant with a hint of cream/vanilla. Delicious as a dessert when ripe and also excellent cooked when green (fried, boiled).
Strengths
- Dwarf port: easy to grow in containers, on balconies, terraces and in bright indoor spaces.
- Very productive: large hands, sweet fruits with firm flesh.
- Resilient: tolerates wind and relative coolness better than many Cavendish varieties.
- Versatile: dessert when ripe, perfect for savory recipes when green.
Quick guide
- Mature height (pots or greenhouses): ~2.0–2.5 m (6.5–8 ft) depending on pot volume and heat.
- Fruits: medium size, thick skin; sweet flesh, "cream/vanilla" aroma.
- Light: full sun to very bright (6–8 h+).
- Ideal temperature: 20–32 °C; avoid < 10 °C (bring indoors before any frost).
- Watering: regular; allow the top of the substrate to dry slightly.
- Substrate: aerated potting soil + perlite/coco; impeccable drainage.
- Fertilizer: during active growth, rich formula (e. g., 20-8-20) every 1–2 weeks.
- Fruiting: possible in ~12–18 months with warmth, light and a large container.
Uses
- Ripe (yellow): very sweet dessert, smooth texture.
- Green: ideal for frying/boiling (tostones, stir-fries, curries).
Note: Vigor and fruit set depend on heat and light and the pot size. A sheltered location reduces leaf tearing in the wind.
