🍌 'Mekong Giant' Banana Tree – Gigantic, rapid growth, 'jungle' look
10" pot (24–48")
10" (24–48") pot
'Mekong Giant' is a spectacular ornamental banana tree known for its vigor and its XXL leaves . Ideal for creating an immediate tropical effect in the garden, on the terrace or in a large pot, it grows very quickly in the warm season and forms a massive pseudostem with an architectural shape.
Strengths
- Very large format : imposing silhouette, giant leaves.
- Rapid growth : "jungle" effect in a single season.
- Outdoor cultivation is possible in summer; overwintering of the plant is recommended in cold climates.
Quick guide
- Height in season (pot/outdoors) : ~3–6 m (10–20 ft) depending on heat, soil and pot volume.
- Leaves : very large (up to ~1–2 m), instant tropical atmosphere.
- Light : full sun to very bright.
- Watering : regular and abundant in hot weather; rich and well-draining soil/potting mix.
- Fertilizer : during active growth, apply a rich supply every 1–2 weeks.
- Wind : choose a location that is rather sheltered (large leaves are susceptible to tearing).
- Flowering/fruit : mainly ornamental in cool climates; fruit not sought for consumption.
Wintering (cold climates)
- In open ground : cut the leaves after frost, mulch the base very thickly ; protect from excess winter water.
- In a pot : overwinter in a frost-free location (cool garage/greenhouse), water very sparingly until spring.
Note: Final size depends heavily on heat, sunlight, water, and nutrition. In cold regions (e.g., Quebec), prioritize growing in large containers or good winter protection for the base of the plant.
