Canna 'Bengal Tiger'
A spectacular variety for its foliage, 'Bengal Tiger' (also called 'Pretoria') offers green leaves broadly striped with yellow, topped with orange flowers. One of the best varieties for foliage effect.
- Flowers: very decorative orange flowers.
- Foliage: green leaves variegated with golden yellow bands, guaranteed tropical effect.
- Growth habit & size: vigorous plant, 100–150 cm in full season.
- Use: focal point in a pot, exotic flower bed, poolside or terrace edge.
- Relative hardiness: to be cultivated as a non-hardy plant in Canada rhizomes to be overwintered in a dry, frost-free location.
- Format received: young plant in a 4" pot.
Care sheet – Culture in Canada
- Light: full sun to partial sun (minimum 4–5 hours of direct sunlight per day for maximum flowering).
- Watering: Water regularly; the substrate should remain fresh to slightly moist, especially in hot weather.
- Substrate: rich and well-draining potting soil, ideally amended with compost.
- Fertilizer: very heavy feeder plant; fertilize every 2–3 weeks in summer with a fertilizer for flowering plants or for bedding plants.
- Growing in pots: perfect in large pots or containers on the terrace; repot as needed to leave room for the rhizomes.
- Outdoor cultivation: possible in open ground in summer in rich and moist soil.
- Wintering: bring the pots indoors before frost or dig up the rhizomes after the first light frost; store frost-free in a cool (5–10 °C) and dry to slightly humid place.
