🍌 ‘Grand Nain’ Banana Plant

A productive Cavendish with the classic dessert-banana flavour, valued for its vigour and fruiting potential.

📏 Mature size: approximately 8–10 ft (2.4–3 m), depending on training and growing conditions.

🏠 Recommended space: a greenhouse or high-ceiling sunroom; it needs more room than a Dwarf Cavendish.

🌱 Choose your size:

  • 4-inch pot — 6–18-inch plant: preorder for spring 2027.
  • 6-inch pot — 18–36-inch plant: preorder for spring 2027.

Measurements are approximate and may vary slightly with the plant’s growth stage at shipping.

Why choose Grand Nain?

Grand Nain belongs to the Cavendish group and is commercially grown for its productivity. In a cold climate, grow it in a large container and move it indoors before frost.

  • Vigorous, fast growth.
  • Potential for generous bunches under excellent conditions.
  • Impressive tropical foliage.
  • A fruiting cultivar for warm, exceptionally bright spaces.

Banana flavour

The fruit has the classic mild, sweet Cavendish flavour and tender flesh when fully ripe.

How to keep it more compact in a container

  • Increase container size gradually.
  • Use a moderate final pot size, understanding that this can reduce production.
  • Provide intense light to prevent stretched, weak growth.
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen.
  • Keep the main pseudostem and, if desired, one replacement sucker.

Important: do not cut the top of the pseudostem to shorten it; this removes its growing point and prevents that stem from flowering.

Growing in Quebec and other cold-winter climates

  • Light: full sun or very bright light, ideally 6–8 hours or more.
  • Temperature: best growth at 20–32°C; bring indoors before temperatures fall below 10°C.
  • Water: keep slightly moist during active growth, without standing water.
  • Soil: rich, airy, and very well drained.
  • Fertilizer: feed regularly during active growth.
