Mango 'Pram Kai Mai'

Variety: Pram Kai Mai (also spelled Pram Kai Mea / Brahm Kai Meu). Type: Potted mango tree.

• The fruit: Thai dessert variety, an improved version of Nam Doc Mai, with even better flavour according to nurseries. Oblong fruit, 12-15 cm, with fibreless flesh, sweet and silky when ripe, golden; it is also eaten green, sweet and crisp.
• Ideal if: you like Nam Doc Mai and want a comparable Thai variety, to eat green or ripe.
• Good to know: spellings vary (Pram Kai Mai, Pram Kai Mea, Brahm Kai Meu): it is the same Thai variety.
• Size & habit: semi-dwarf, compact tree, excellent in a pot, sometimes with several harvests per year in favourable conditions.
• Relative hardiness: not hardy in Quebec; grow in a pot, always sheltered from frost.
• Size received: 1 plant in a 10" pot.
• Availability: pre-order; delivery or pickup in May-June 2027. Limited quantity.

Care sheet - Growing in Quebec

• Light: Full sun 6-8 hours per day (south window, greenhouse, or outdoors in summer after acclimatization).
• Growing medium: Very well-draining potting mix, such as Pro-Mix HP or similar, with a little perlite.
• Watering: Let the top of the mix dry between waterings; avoid letting water stand in the cachepot.
• Fertilizer: Fruit-tree fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during the growing season.
• Temperature: Bring the plant indoors before nights drop below 5 °C; never expose to frost.
• Overwintering: Very bright room, cool to temperate; reduced watering but without letting the mix dry out completely.
