Birds of Paradise – Strelitzia 'Mandela's Gold' – 8" Pot
Strelitzia 'Mandela's Gold' is a rare form of the bird of paradise, selected for its golden-yellow flowers rather than orange ones. In pots, it's a star plant that brings a very exotic touch to patios, verandas, and greenhouses in Canada.
- Flowers: large, bird-head shaped flowers with golden yellow and blue petals on sturdy stems.
- Foliage: large, upright green leaves, decorative all year round.
- Habit & size: plant forming a dense clump, which can reach 1–1.5 m in height in a well-cultivated pot.
- Use: architectural plant for greenhouse, bright room or summer terrace.
- Relative hardiness: not hardy in Canada; to be grown exclusively in pots, protected from frost.
- Format received: well-established plant in an 8" pot.
Care sheet – Culture in Canada
- Light: very bright in full sun (south-facing window, greenhouse, terrace in summer); gradually acclimate to full outdoor sun.
- Watering: allow the surface of the substrate to dry slightly between waterings; avoid stagnant water in the saucer.
- Substrate: well-draining and slightly rich potting soil, in a pot with good drainage.
- Fertilizer: Fertilizer for flowering plants or citrus every 3–4 weeks during the growing season.
- Temperature: protect from frost; ideally between 15 and 25 °C.
- Repotting: prefers to be a little cramped in its pot before flowering; repot only when the root ball is well filled.
