Paulownia Tomentosa
Young Paulownia tomentosa, also known as the imperial tree, is prized for its rapid growth and large, decorative leaves. In just a few years, it can become a spectacular shade tree if conditions are favorable.
- Use: Large ornamental tree, ideal for creating shade and an exotic effect.
- Growth: very rapid once well rooted and fertilized.
- Flowering: mauve flowers in clusters on mature plants, in suitable climate.
- Cultivation in Canada: to be installed in a very sheltered location or grown in a large pot to better manage winter protection.
- Format received: 4" potted plant, approximate height 15–45 cm (6–18").
Care sheet – Culture in Canada
- Light: full sun, in the most open location possible.
- Watering: water regularly during the first year to encourage root development, then reduce watering once the tree is well established; avoid constantly waterlogged soils.
- Substrate: rich, deep and well-draining soil; in pots, use quality potting soil with a little compost.
- Fertilizer: light fertilization in spring (fertilizer for shrubs or ornamental trees) to support growth.
- Hardiness: some hybrids are more resistant to cold, but young plants must be well protected from intense frosts and drying winds.
- Pruning: It is possible to prune in early spring to shape the trunk or to encourage a bushy habit with large leaves.
