Pitahaya 'American Beauty'
A highly prized pitahaya variety, valued for its magenta-red flesh and sweet, slightly aromatic flavor. Grown in a 4" (6–18") pot, this young plant quickly develops its fleshy, triangular stems and is well-suited to container or greenhouse cultivation in Canada.
- Flesh & flavour: red-magenta flesh, sweet and aromatic, ideal to enjoy fresh or in smoothies.
- Fruit skin: bright pink to red, very decorative.
- Uses: fresh consumption, desserts, coulis, juice.
- Pollination: generally self-fertile, but cross-pollination can improve fruit set.
- Format received: young rooted plant in a 4" pot (approximate height 15–45 cm / 6–18").
Care sheet – Culture in Canada
- Light: very bright in full, gentle sunlight; ideally a south-facing window, a greenhouse, or outdoors in summer (after the risk of frost).
- Watering: water thoroughly then allow the top third of the substrate to dry out before repeating; sensitive to excess water.
- Substrate: very well-draining cactus-type mix (with perlite or pumice stone) in a pot with a drainage hole.
- Fertilizer: Fertilize lightly every 3–4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced or cactus fertilizer.
- Temperature: optimal growth between 20 and 32 °C; bring indoors before 10–12 °C.
- Wintering: keep frost-free, relatively dry and very bright (cool room or greenhouse); significantly reduce watering.
- Support: provide a sturdy support or trellis, as the plant is a climbing vine.
